About Memrise

Memrise is Machine Learning based App which enables users to learn different languages. It was founded by Ed Cooke and Greg Detre. The app uses Machine Learning and Localized Content to adapt to what a user exactly needs to learn and understand the content. It is a user-generated learning platform. Although Memrise was basically focused on learning languages, it has been offering a lot of other content on a wide range of subjects. The platform now has more than 15 courses, covering almost 25 languages. These languages include English, Korean, Spanish, Japanese, French, German, Russian, Chinese (Mandarin & Cantonese), Vietnamese, Portuguese, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Arabic, Dutch, Bahasa Indonesian, Italian, Polish and Turkish.

Founder Ed Cooke has been awarded the Grand Master of Memory, while Greg was a neuroscientist at Princeton specializing in, you guessed it right: the science of memory and forgetting.

The app launched their first beta version when they won the Princeton entrepreneurship club tiger launch competition in 2009. Then on 1st October 2012, a total of 100 users were signed up on the first original Memrise platform. Since 2013 the app has been available on both Android and iOS. It was also awarded the best app in google play stare awards, May 2017

About the Series B funding

Memrise has now raised $15.5 million to expand its current platform. The platform has now crossed 35 million users globally. The key investors in round 2 of funding are Octopus Ventures and Korelya Capital. Investors who remained since the seed round are Avalon Ventures and Balderton Capital. The company has not yet revealed its market valuation. The CEO plans to use this additional funding to expand the AI platform and add more features to the application. The app’s key factor is its machine learning technology, which has also helped in spending awareness about the app. The company follows a freemium revenue model. The free version lets you learn different languages for free, but the paid version adds additional features like a grammar bot or helps in professional chats with a difficulty of words and speed reviews.

What is the connection of Apple WWDC2018 with Memrise?

During the Apple WWDC2018 event, Memrise was presented in Create ML. Create ML is a new feature by Apple which allows people to train and modify machine learning services even if they don’t have a technical background. Create ML is developed fully on Swift. All the training will be a GPU-accelerated tool for making the process incredibly fast. As displayed at the event, the app developer Memrise used it to reduce image recognition training. The time duration cut down was from 24 hours to just 18 minutes and the system to display this was an iMac pro.
